Sewing was a wash yesterday. I did go ahead and lop off 1/2" at CF tapered to nothing at the sides, did rather a hack job of it, and immediately sewed the small CF waistband wrong. Twice. Called it then and there, the longer bands were NOT going to go well.

Another sleepless night thanks to this stupid organ, punctuated by a most malodorous smell. I typically ascribe those smells to my weed-smoking neighbour who stands barely past my window and stinks the place up, but this had an added layer of a petrol refinery and it permeated the entire back side of the house. Did a skunk wander by and have to discharge its back end at something? I've never smelled skunk spray that was fresh. It took like an hour to clear out enough to open the window again. The sun was definitely rising as I attempted to sleep again. At least this time my dream wasn't deep enough to pull me back so firmly into sleep when my alarm was going off.

But more unpleasantness awaited me. Was reading on the train, as I normally do, and my body suddenly decided it didn't like, not one little bit. I managed to make it to a station, got off and immediately plunked my butt down on a bench. I started looking for the nearest bin bc I was about three seconds away from puking. When my motion sickness decides to rear its head, it does so ferociously! Not helping at all is that I am also dehydrated enough to be dizzy when my head changes positions, and I've been having trouble focusing through my glasses, looking down more when I don't need to and getting that awesome reading lens watery effect. I'll have to get a pair without the reading portion for travel like this.

Anyway, I am super tired and still not feeling like my tummy is settled and I really need a drink. Send good thoughts, it's gonna be a long day.

Oh yes, and tomorrow's plans are the new How to Train Your Dragon movie with M! That will be fun. I expect my pants to be finished this weekend.

1. They announced the amounts for our biannual bonus and the pre-tax amount is a little higher than last time. Not sure what the take-home amount will be, but I'll find out next Friday. (The day after my birthday, so that's a nice present.)

2. For some reason this week has felt so long. Like every day I've felt like it must be Friday. Even Monday! And now tomorrow is finally Friday! I'm excited about that. Taking next Thursday off for the aforementioned birthday, so it will be a short week, too. (And then the week after that I get that Friday off for 4th of July, so two short weeks in a row!)

3. Tuxie looks so contented.

This lovely stained glass style sticker came from the Hudson Gardens gift shop. Unfortunately, on Monday, it felt extremely not right to have a bunch of bright and sparkly colors, hence the black "overlay" for that day. It was not as bright and sparkly a week as I'd hoped.

Losing Cy really felt like the only thing on the week, with nothing else leaving much of an impression. I'm glad we went out on a hike the day after, if only because it kept us from dwelling, and because it meant Bella didn't spend another confusing day inside. But the rest of the week? I miss him. I keep looking down at his bed thinking he'll be there. Trying to spend a lot of time thinking about 14 good years spent together, and how glad I was that we both got to be there in the end for him, too. But I miss him.

Goals for the week:

  • I did finish reading Maeve Fly
  • We did visit the bank
  • I didn't get plants for mom, and probably won't do so this year
  • I didn't finish the third part of the snowflake outline
  • I did not do anything to work on the new WIP
  • We did get some outdoor time
  • I tried to cancel my dentist appointment, but had to leave a voicemail
  • I tried to make the other call I needed to, but their computers were down and so I was told to call back another time
  • I did finish the DW catch-up I needed to do (but now need to do another)
  • I didn't do anything with my pin boards
  • I did confirm our plans for the memorial
  • I started reading Camp Damascus

Tracked habits:

  • Work - 5/7
  • Household Maintenance - 3/7
  • Physical Activity - 2/7
  • Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 2/7 - one day of over 500 words, one day of over 1000
  • Wrote on 2nd+ Draft - 0/7
  • Meta Work - 3/7
  • Personal Writing - 6/7
  • Other Creative Things - 2/7
  • Reading - 7/7 - mostly on Maeve Fly, but also read a bit of Duma Key with Alex, a bit of my ebook side read, and started Camp Damascus
  • Attention to Media - 6/7 - Sunday we watched some storm chasing and I listened to music; Tuesday and Wednesday we watched coverage of the protests in LA; Thursday listened to some music and then coverage of Israel attacking Iran; Friday we watched some storm chasing; Saturday I listened to music.
  • Video Games - 0/7
  • Social Interaction - 4/7

Total words written: 2618, a bit on fic planning, most on my post about Cy

Got home and was so excited that I had a project to work on. First I needed to attach all the interfacings. Then I said FIIIIINE I'll serge edges too and did that. My serger is still... not working 100%. I prefer the look of 4-thread but it doesn't always catch them in the outer thread, and in a few places it barely caught any at all. The fabric is not shreddy so I'm not worried about it.

Happily stitched away until it was time for the zipper, and now I have a grump about zipper lots on Amazon. I got a pack of 100 invisible zips for like $30 and that was great, all the same size, lots of colours. I bought a pack of regular zips for about the same, but it was a mix of sizes, 20 each of 5 lengths. Which is fine, but it does mean I have much less colour selection than the invisible pack. What is up with that! All of the regular packs were like, 40 max, unless you wanted 3" zips. Grump grump. There wasn't anything close to a match in the regular zips, but one of the invisibles was perfect, so I prepped my zipper for that.

After the zip was installed, I put the legs together and the crotch so I could try them on! They are pretty good, actually. The front waist feels high (one of the antique sewing manuals I read said that ladies with prominent tummies should lower the front of their skirts 1/2" to swing it backwards) but looked ok in the mirror. I think I will feel the unbalance once the waist band is on so that is something to consider before I do it. Another concern is that the pattern itself has a curved hip area rather than darts, which always looks a bit off on me. My body is not rounded there, it's pretty straight and it's when you get to the top of the femur that my muscle bulges and I need fabric room. But it's not excessive and overall, the fit is nice. Just something to keep in mind for future makes.

Tonight I will get the waistband on and hem it. That's all that needs to be done! The waistband is gonna be complicated though, I will need all of my braincells for it. I had a dark o'clock wake up to deal with my stupid uterus that I couldn't get back to sleep from until nearly dawn, and then I was deep in a dream when my alarm was going off that I kept dropping back into once I hit snooze. I am so tired today.

Via the False Claims Act, NIH Puts Universities on Edge
A funding pause at the University of Michigan illustrates the uncertainty around new language in NIH grant awards.

Sadly, another way in which the current administrative shenanigans are rippling out and affecting everything.

I post things like this because I think the devil is in the details, and changes to the Notice of Award is definitely a "detail" with far-ranging consequences.  It's easy to read a headline these days and know something is bad and stop there.  But I think everyone deserves to know where the actual levers of power are and how they are flipped.  So, here is one:  slipping changes into legal wording that make institutions afraid of crossing the government lest they get sued into oblivion.

The ABA Declares War
Trump tried to first “kill all the lawyers.” Now the lawyers have hit back.

This is absolutely an issue to watch.  Though there's real questions about the impartiality of the Supreme Court right now, the judiciary has been the last bulwark against the executive branch lately.  Until the legislative branch manages to find its bearings (or we find them for them via midterm elections) and start exercising its OWN oversight powers, the judicial branch HAS to remain functional.  And lawyers being afraid to bring suits absolutely will break the judicial branch.  They can only rule on what people are willing to sue for.

Also, to be clear:  this is not only about the lawyers.  Even if you don't like lawyers for whatever reason, they represent real, live people being real, live hurt by things that are happening.  And those real, live people whose rights have been violated need to be able to find a lawyer to help them defend those rights, or they can't push back, and they might as well not have those rights at all.  Make no mistake:  lawyers as a profession don't just work for the rich and powerful - they work for everyday folks, too.  And given the rich and powerful in power right now, it's everyday folks who will be hurt the most if lawyers are afraid to go up against the government.

My heart was a damn liar and the hockey season is over. At least Florida didn't win it in our house. It was a better game too, the Oilers were really trying, but Florida was just that much better and their goalie is disgustingly good. I would be so thrilled if he played for us but he does not and so I am annoyed by how good he is lol.

I was grossly hot when I got home so it was an immediate strip down and into the shower. Then I wanted to wear my new dress, so I did. The skirt is large enough to pull things off of other surfaces when I brush by hehe. While the game was on, I moved some of the fabric bins around, and somehow forgot that I had inventoried the blue ones? I really ought to label them or else my fabric "catalogue" is useless now that I've forgotten which one was which.

But it allowed me to find the length of green cotton that is stained, so it was the perfect fabric for the Ginger pants. I dropped the end of it off the table edge and only remembered a few minutes later that the cat fountain was there, and sure enough, the end of it was now SOAKED haha. But I could still cut out the front and all the waist area bits, which I did. I had enough for cropped pants, which is perfect. Tonight I will cut out the back legs and then get to work. Debating if I want to make it into a jumpsuit, since the legs could not be cut side by side I have a length of uncut stuff down the center. But I already cut the waistband so... no. But I could use that extra for another mockup, probably. It is not a very pretty shade of green.

Also need to do laundry, I have been putting it off for a really long time.

This morning, picture this: I have flipped the blankets down into place. Calcifer leaps onto the bed and into the corner made by pillows, and starts digging at them like she knows something is underneath. Sophie jumps up and onto her with such force that she goes right over and for a moment, they are just a ball of fur and legs and tails. Two kittens is definitely the way to go <3

Game 6 tonight and if we win, we're coming back on Friday for the FOR REAL absolutely last game of the season. If we lose, at least Florida didn't win in our house. I want to keep my expectations reasonable and keep thinking "this might be the last time i get to wear my jersey (this season)" or "this might be the last hockey game of the season", my heart is saying it's not over yet. Only time will tell.

I have a confession: I am absolute rubbish at maintaining a dental care routine. It is the first thing to go when I am not mentally up to it and the last thing to get back. I dislike flossing and have not even tried the Waterpik I got in December 2022. Despite that, I got a clean bill of health on my cleaning and x-rays. Now I just need to maintain it bc I really don't want to go through all the fillings and root canals or anything all over again! And I really gotta be brave about the waterpik lol.

I put on leggings this morning to go with my jersey, which is a little longer and covers my butt. With my tank top underneath tucked in, it is SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE than the dress pants I've been wearing that slip down all the f'n time. I really really need to get on those trousers! That was my plan for Sunday buuuut. Tonight I just need to make a dinner and wash up some dishes and call it good. That should leave lots of time for sewing. Well, for cutting out, more like. And I have all day to make a decision lol.

1. It seems like there was a lot more foot traffic in Little Tokyo today, so hopefully our sales will pick up this week. And this afternoon they announced the curfew has been pushed back to 10pm from 8pm, so we can keep the store open till nine.

2. Carla is home safe and sound.

3. I had a nice dinner at DCA tonight before picking her up from the airport. Very warm and muggy this evening, though, which I could have done without!

On Friday I went directly to the mall where M works to go shoooooppppiiiiinnnngggggggg. I used my birthday coupon at Hot Topic (I got a cute dress with mushrooms and snails on it, and a Jurassic World blind box that had T-Rex!), four mini hand lotions at Bath & Body Works (they had SO MANY SOAPS and only two major displays of the summer scents and almost NO other significant collection of any scent except Gingham-everything and something with tomatoes? It was weird. It's fine, it takes me so long to use the full size ones anyway, small ones are perfect), and finally a new hockey jersey. The website said they had the player I wanted but... that was a lie. I couldn't even find someone to ask and all the jerseys were locked together except for one plain one in the size I wanted. That was sufficient, I was really waffling on a named jersey anyway.

M and I took the bus home, where I ordered food from Skip the Dishes, which took SO LONG to "confirm" the order that it arrived before ever doing so. I got the "your courier is about to arrive" and I worried bc without the confirmation, I couldn't track the driver. Did he go to the wrong building? I messaged him on the app at the 8 minute mark, and then he showed up at 9. Typically the text arrives and within 5 mins the courier is there so... you can understand my concern, I'm sure.

I ate and loafed on the couch, and just as I was thinking that I should go to the other room and watch Drag Race, my brain said no! No TV, only sewing! So... 9:30 pm and I am stitching on the last bit of rickrack (I got the bodice edges done, centered the rest on the midriff and that covered the front plus 4 or 5 peaks on the back on either side. Good enough!) and then making the straps, attaching them, and then the lining. "I guess I need to grade these seams now" I thought and immediately decided to put it down. No cutting after 10pm!

In the morning, it was gloomy and raining. It was Knit In Public day but I was hesitant to go due to said rain. Friend who'd invited me said they had a tent set up, but later said they had moved inside the outdoor venue's cafe. But she wasn't feeling well and would let me know if she made it, since she also had to set up for a game viewing party at her community league and wouldn't be staying until it ended at 4 anyway.

So, after a cup of coffee, I did the bodice things I needed to do (trimming, understitching, pressing), I put the gathering stitches into the skirt tops, drew them up and pinned them to the bodice. I'd run out of the matching thread colour the previous night so now it was go-out o'clock to do those errands. I put on my neeewwwwwww hockey jersey and a rain coat (bc it was raining) and headed out. First stop: bottle depot. Second stop: creative re-use focused on sewing, where I made out like an absolute bandit. A couple patterns, some notions (2 rolls of narrow interfacing, 132" of a pretty lace, suspender clips, 6 pairs of snips, three of which have curved tips, two mismatched but similar kilt buckles), a 3m length of knit fabric with safety pins on it, a meter of cutesy narwhals in double knit, and 2 meters of absolutely *delicious* red wool. I absolutely plan to make a short coat out of it, it'll be a squeeze but I should be able to do it.

Third stop: Marshalls fabric store, where I got thread. I did take a scrap of my rickrack with me, and absolutely NOTHING matched. The navys were far too deep and rich, the royal blues were too bright, etc. Guess I'm stuck with a partial band! Fourth stop: Lunch at Chipotle. It was OK, I've only had it once before about 10 years ago. BarBurrito is better.

Then I decided to get some groceries and call it a day. By the time I left the store, I was rather peopled out so... probably the right decision. I was home by 2, and finished sewing my dress before the hockey game started, including hand sewing. Hockey game was terrible, but at least it wasn't a shut out. We are back in Florida tomorrow night, possibly for the end of the series.

Saturday evening I was watching Drag Race at last when all the shenanigans happened in the alley. Stolen vehicle, I heard that the owner was rather nearby and had been threatened with hatchet when it was stolen. No one was hurt (that I know of), the building was not damaged beyond a small chip on the corner, but the car was totally wrecked. The thieves abandoned it bc the front bumper had been torn off and become stuck underneath it. Back was all bumped around too, and scratches on the side. Tow truck showed up around 11 to load it up and take it away.

Yesterday I really didn't do much. I cut down the patterns for a pair of pants but again waffled on my fabric decision. Mostly I watched true crime documentaries and played phone games. For dinner I made chili with ground beef and all of my remaining peppers and I even purchased a can of mushrooms for it. It was yummy, but I was too hungry to let it simmer for all that long.

Could NOT sleep last night but any time I tried to read or play a game or whatever, my eyes insisted they were too tired!! I did finally get to sleep at some point and of course morning came so early. I am le tired.

Today I have a dental appointment, and I plan to hit up Walmart on my way home for more groceries (staple items, mostly; Safeway was very lacking). I will also get something to eat while I'm out, the last thing I will want to do by the time I get home is cook.

In the meantime, on to look for coat patterns!

1. I walked up to the neighborhood grocery store this morning thinking to buy some roast beef for a sandwich for lunch but on my way there I remembered they have grills out in the parking lot on the weekend and sell sandwiches and meat there. I was worried it might be cash only and I didn't have cash, but they take your order and you just take the order sheet inside and pay at the register, then pick your food up outside, so I got a tri-tip sandwich and it was so good. It was also huge, so I had half for lunch and half for dinner. Planning to get it again next weekend when Carla's back so we can split it.

2. Speaking of which, Carla will be home tomorrow night. Her flight's getting in around 9pm, so I am going to head down to Disneyland after work and then down to the airport after that (she's flying into the airport in Irvine because it's much more chill than LAX).

3. The Little Tokyo store was able to open up today with no issue. I doubt there were a whole lot of customers, and the curfew is still in effect so we have to close at 6:30pm until that's lifted, but I'm very glad we were able to open and that there was no damage to the store (not even any graffiti, apparently). I'm going to stop by tomorrow and check things out, since I don't have any meetings or anything planned for earlier in the day.

4. All tucked in!

1. The other day I bought some golden kiwis and they are so good. I like kiwis a lot, especially the golden ones, but these have got to be the best I've ever had. Perfectly ripe and so flavorful. I got them from work, so I'm gonna have to check on Monday and see if we still have some.

2. From the sound of things the No Kings protests around the country were a huge success. I hope that it can actually lead to some change. The ones in downtown LA seem to have been relatively peaceful as well, so hopefully we'll be able to open the store tomorrow morning without issue.

3. Molly's just waiting for a moment of privacy to start splashing around in her water bowl.

Currently Reading
A Botanist's Guide to Rituals and Revenge
6%. Newest mystery in the series and my current audiobook. This series has developed more of an overarching plot than just stand-alone mysteries and I do not remember much of the book before this but hopefully it will come back to me.

Break in Case of Emergency
8%. YA novel set in the mid 90s about a girl living on her grandparents' farm after her mom dies, reunited with her estranged father who turns out to be gay. Sounded interesting. Just read the first couple chapters so far.

The Fourth Girl
35%. Twenty-five years after their friend disappeared on prom night, three women reunite in their home town on the anniversary of the disappearance. But when someone else connected to their missing friend dies on that same day, it seems like more than a coincidence. This is pretty good so far.

Horrorstör
10%. This is the second horror novel I've read set in an Ikea-type store. I've had this on my to-read list for a while and just happened to find it in a neighborhood Little Library so now seemed like a good time to read it.

Riding the Rails
39%.

How Jesus Became God: The Exaltation of a Jewish Preacher from Galilee
52%.

Recently Finished
Architectural Follies in America
Finally finished this! This is such a short book and has pictures so I thought it would be a quick read but honestly it turned out to be kind of a slog. There are not enough pictures, so a lot of it is just reading about these supposedly interesting building but now getting a visual representation. And the pictures that are included are all black and white, and some are not the best quality. This seems like someone's hobby project, so I guess they couldn't put a lot of money in it, but it could have been a much better book than it was.

Red Hail
This was pretty interesting!

Murder in Season
Well, I take it back. After mentioning last time that this is one of the few historical mystery series I've read lately that doesn't have any queer or non-white characters, this book did turn out to have a gay character (and he wasn't the murderer).

Murder at Hambledon Hall
New Cleopatra Fox book! This was a good one. And there was an announcement at the end that the next book will be out by the end of the year. This author has multiple series going, so I don't know how they manage it, but I'm not complaining.

Baby Drag Queen
Grabbed this off the Pride display at the library last week as it looked interesting and is very short so would be a nice quick read for a time when I needed one (I read it in about half an hour this morning). It's about a trans boy who is interested in doing drag, which is not a topic I've seen in other books with trans characters. But the book itself was a huge let down. The writing is very stilted (especially noticeable with the dialogue) and there were so many things that made me go ??? that I couldn't get into the story because I kept trying to figure out why the author was making these choices and at some times trying to figure out what was going on altogether. One big one is that the character is referred to by a male name throughout, but his mom does not know he is trans. So I was left wondering if it was a writing convention where the mom is really calling the character by another name but the author is using his preferred name instead, or if the kid has requested to be called a male name and the mom has gone along with this to the point of getting it legally (?) changed (the kid goes to school using that name and also gets multiple jobs under that name, with no one noting anything about a different legal name) but still is completely gobsmacked when the MC says he's not a girl. (It's definitely not a situation where that would ever be the name his parents gave him.) I just could not stop wondering what was going on with the name throughout the book, but there were a bunch of other smaller things, too.

Bokura no Hentai vol. 5-6
Was not expecting the trans girl to be handled this well, but I was really impressed with the sixth volume.

The final part of the garden pictures from last week. Finally!

Bee!

Dogwood.

In the plains garden:

Nice vibrant paintbrush.

Sixteen more pictures

Prickly pear.

Intensely blue larkspur.

Flax.

And then to the little river area that borders the plains on one side and the montane gardens on the other:

Which really just means more koi. :)

I love the classic tri-color ones.

Alex named this one "Patches."

Patches wants food. :o :O :o

I am always delighted to see this one! A really unique gold color, and the fanciest fins!

Another very striking one is this silver one. So getting the silver one and the gold one next to each other (plus a nicely classic orange one) seems like it should be good luck, haha.

Then we headed back through the montane gardens toward the alpine and rock gardens:

Solomon's seal. (Had to look this one up!)

A lovely mix of flowers!

Over by the orangery, and the other semi-indoor and greenhouses:

It was slooooowly closing up on its snack.

I do always love the carnivorous plants. :)

Then inside, to the pavilion where they have most of the orchids.

The dangling petals are so loooooong!

I was apparently quite taken with that feature.

Then a quick walk through the conservatory. I would have stayed longer, but I think Taylor was getting quite tired.

A hibiscus so perfect it looked fake.

Also had to look this one up: Rangoon creeper, apparently.

1. Today was a long day with a lot of meetings, but I did manage to get all the other stuff on my to-do list done in between at least.

2. Most other businesses in Little Tokyo are already shut down temporarily so we made the decision to close our store tomorrow. While the protests (or rather the response to them) has been disruptive to business for that store, it's still been worth keeping it open, but those protests were more spontaneous and the planned events tomorrow for No Kings Day are going to draw a huge crowd. The only business we'd get would be some protestors buying lunch or snacks, and considering employee safety it's better to just shut down. We also had the store boarded up just in case, since one whole side is all windows and a lot of the front is as well. I definitely think closing tomorrow is the right choice, so I'm glad we were able to convince the company president to give us the okay.

3. While Carla's out of town I moved one of the cars all the way up the driveway into the back yard so I don't have to worry about moving it from one side of the street to the other on street sweeping days, and Tuxie seems to like having the car there lol.

I didn't head out from San Diego until around 6pm yesterday so I didn't get to Disneyland until almost eight, which meant the park was already very cloggy for nighttime events, but it wasn't particularly crowded overall, so once I got past the big Main Street clog it was pretty nice.
